Masters Degree in Art & Design
In the 1990's, despite a number of years as a professional artist, i began to question whether my paintings were still relevant to contemporary life. to find some answers i enrolled on a two and a half year part time Masters degree course in art & design.
The University's MA course explored 'Art' from a broad social and historical context, and i found this complimented my own ideas of interest.
The critical theory, with it's subsequent analysis, was truly invigorating; and the practical projects became voyages of self discovery.
new perspectives brought new directions, and the two and a half year journey helped me see with fresh eyes. it also reaffirmed my commitment to figurative painting; with a social and humanistic narrative.

Part of a Final Degree Show installation in which i dealt with hidden domestic violence.
The work 'Punch and Judy' consisted of three full sized figures. made from wood , wax, and textiles.
wearing contemporary clothing the mother and child sat hidden within a large black draped Punch and Judy Booth; while Punch watched impassively from a series of front row theatre seats.
mortuary slips spilled from the booth on to the gallery floor; confirming the horrendous number of women and children killed , (over the previous ten years), by a family member.
